This is a picture of Kramer sprinting to me last week after being called to "come" - it was such a joy to have a dog at the coast that I could let off leash and know that he would come when called. We both had a great time! I was so proud of him and all he has accomplished through training! "
It used to be when Kramer would escape from the apartment, Ali would have to knock on a neighbor's door and ask them to come out so she could catch Kramer.
That must have been embarrassing! So how did Kramer and Ali come so far? Ali followed these rules she learned in the Impeccable Manners Class:
- Generously reward correct behavior
- In the beginning, only call when there is a high likelihood your dog will come
- Only calling once
- Go get your dog if it does not come
- Make sure you do not accidentally punish your dog for coming by doing something your dog does not like within 2 minutes of it coming to you.
But Ali didn't stop there. Ali was smart and recognized those were just the basic skills and she learned even more in the Out and About Class. In both these classes, Ali learned some really fun training exercises that taught Kramer to pay attention and to come running as fast as he could when Ali called. Ali could have also accomplished this training through private consultations or our Doggie MakeOver Program where I train the dog for the owner.
