Oh Joy A Puppy

"This is like having a toddler in the house"
Owning a puppy can be such a joy but along with that joy is the shock of how much work this dynamic ball of energy can bring into our lives. Puppies need to be trained to follow commands (on and off leash) and to not misbehave. Puppies also need to be exercised and socialized. The goal is to mold each puppies behavior to the point in which the puppy is welcome anywhere. Our Puppy class will begin you on the process of meeting these goals.

We limit class size to ensure quality so classes fill quickly therefore Pre-registration is Required.

Obedience Commands
The Well-Mannered dog only advocates quality training practices that are effective regardless of the age of dog, fun and humane (that do not cause pain or fear). Puppy class is taught off leash with a real life format and the goal of mastering verbal control.

• Paying Attention when your say its name
• Walking on a loose leash
• Sit, lay down and stay
• Coming When Called

Misbehavior
Puppies need to be housetrained, to learn to not bite or jump on people and they need to learn to not steal or chew things up. As owners work on these issues it is best to be proactive in preventing behavior problems when you can not work with your dog. Crate Training your puppy might be one option you choose to prevent behavior problems. When you attend The Well-Mannered Dog Puppy Classes you will learn prevent behavior problems from occurring and what to do about:

• Housetraining
• Playbiting
• Jumping
• Chewing

Socialization
The critical socialization period of the dog is between 8 and 16 weeks of age but socialization does not end there. The social behavior of the dog does not plateau until 3 years of age. Socialization must continue well into adulthood. Puppies need to play with dogs that will not hurt them or destroy their confidence. Our puppy socialization class offers:

• Proper early socialization to develop dog and people friendly dogs
• Play With other puppies in a fun, safe environment

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states in its position statement "it should be standard care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated" and "puppies can start socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age as long as the puppy has received one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to beginning class and vaccines are kept up to date throughout the class. For these reasons requirements for enrolling in class are:

• Your puppy is in good health
• Your puppy has received its first set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to starting class
• Your puppy is kept up to date on its vaccines
• Your puppy is 7-18 weeks of age at the first class

Exercise
The most common cause to behavior problems is the dog is not getting enough exercise. Exercising a dog is not as straightforward as it might sound. If the dog pulls on leash taking it on walks may not be a great choice and if the dog is not a natural retriever then your can not tire out the dog with retrieving games. This is one reason owners learn various ways to exercise their dog in puppy class.
